What a week - and a bit!

Interviews, work experience, Easter, visitors, live music, more sunshine and.... a job!

Thursday saw me in a suit and ready for an interview as a Hall Porter. Well what a wonderful place to work- 4 star hotel with a fantastic sea view but what would the job be like? Interview went well and got called back to do a shift to see how I liked it, only trouble was they wanted me on Easter Monday and on the 2- 10 shift - Oh joy!

A working man!

So sarnies in hand I left for my first days work in nearly 2 years. What exactly does being a hall porter involve? Well I was about to find out.

Arrived at the hotel in good time- and my new shoes were just great!

Met up with the head porter- James, who was going to show me the ropes or the towels as it turned out! Must have shifted 1000+ towels to and from the swimming pool and spa.

Next job was to tidy the kids play area- red balls, green balls, blue and orange balls all had to be in the right place in the "Jungle Tumble." After 30 minutes sorting all looked good- then they let the kids back in and within seconds it was all a load of balls again.

Shift the sound system, tidy the lounge, fit a few light bulbs, carry in the odd case ( good tips) clear the empties from the bar - that was the worst bit, cos none of them were mine! After all this the new shoes were not feeling quite so good and I needed a break. Staff restaurant was excellent so pigged out on beef ghoulash and quiche and curly wurly chips- it that healthy?

All in all I thought my first day had gone quite well but would they offer me the job? Next day the phone rang and I had a job, just one problem, I needed a uniform - had they got a shirt big enough- small, medium or large? No sorry I think I need extra large!

Good Friday

We were up early on Friday ready to welcome Anne's son and his wife ( and dog) Expected a nice quiet day, chatting, with a few beers maybe, after their 5am start and long drive down from the Midlands- should have known better! Like mother- like son- they hadn't been here 15 minutes and we were off for a walk! Just a quick one - we were out for an hour at least.

Suberb weather though, so we ate lunch in the garden and then- guess what? -another walk was suggested- WHAT?!!

Off we went to the beach this time.

After another hour on the beach we headed back to Charlestown to WALK! around the harbour- enough's, enough, I went to the bar whilst THEY walked around the harbour!

Saturday

Anne's Birthday. We had a lovely lunch at a local village pub- crab sarnies and a ploughman's. In the evening we went into Truro to see the Illegal Eagles-Brilliant is all you can say!

Wednesday brought more live music.

After an hours drive in torrential rain we arrived at Plymouth Pavilions. We had tickets to see Australian Pink Floyd. Great venue, good atmosphere and the beer was not too expensive

Aussie Pink Floyd were just fantastic- 3 hours of superb music and amazing special effects.

Thursday - sun shining again and Anne wanted to go to the garden centre. Trelawny ( very cornish) is a big centre about 7 miles away.

Nice cup of tea, a fruit scone and two lovely plants and I meet a friend on the bench outside!

Friday- and we are off on our travels again - this time it's about an hours drive down to St.Ives to see Anne's son and his wife again. Decide not to take the car into the town because parking is always difficult so got the train for the last couple of miles. Wow.... what a great journey along the very edge of the coast and all for £2 return!

Meet up with David and Tanya at their lovely rented apartment and within 15 minutes- guess what?- yep- we are off for a walk!!

A short drive and we are at Sennen cove.... walk, walk, walk, felt like we were walking back to St.Ives, but it was a lovely beach and the pub lunch after was excellent. Ploughmans with real local cheddar cheese.

David and Tanya with Penny the lurcher.

The Med?- no... this is Cornwall in April.

  1. Well done Mel. Congratulations on the job. All that training you've done with the right arm over the past couple of years will come in handy for humping all those suitcases.
    Brilliant blog and great pics.
